Are Invisible Braces Right For You?

Most people have seen invisible braces advertised at least once in their lives but often have a lot of questions remaining. If you've been curious about getting your teeth straightened with invisible braces but don't know if they'll be right for you, here are a few situations that could apply to you that are perfect for getting invisible braces.

If You've Worn Braces Before

Many people have had braces at some point in their lives but end up not happy with the way that their teeth look later on in life. This is because teeth that are straightened sometimes start to shift after the treatment is complete, especially if you didn't wear a retainer as directed.

This is a great choice for invisible braces because your bite and jaw are likely still aligned, but your teeth have slipped somewhat out of position. Invisible braces are built a lot like modern retainers, so they're perfect for fixing these alignment issues and then maintaining a corrected smile at the end of the treatment.

If You Have Fillings

Dental fillings can unfortunately be a problem for traditional braces. Since the tension required to move teeth is put entirely on the brackets attached to the teeth, this can spell issues for dental fillings. In extreme cases, traditional braces can even pull fillings out.

This isn't an issue for invisible braces, though. Invisible braces wrap around the entire tooth instead of just covering a part of it. This lets the invisible braces move the tooth without risking damage to dental treatments.

If Your Teeth Are Moderately Crooked

Mild to moderately crooked teeth are best treated by invisible braces. Extreme misalignment problems, like having a tooth unable to descend out because of overcrowding, may not receive adequate care from invisible braces. However, if you just have some crooked teeth, spacing issues, or normal crowding issues (with all your teeth descended), invisible braces can very likely help you.

If You're at a Higher Risk for Oral Health Problems

Finally, standard braces often aren't a good fit for people who have frequent oral health issues or a pre-existing condition that can put them at a higher risk for them, like radiation therapy targeting the face or neck.

Invisible braces are a good choice in this situation because they can be readily removed in order to care for your oral hygiene. This means that you're not at a higher risk of developing problems like cavities, which can happen with traditional braces.
